Mimi Yoon, is a LA area artist, whose art allures and seduces the audience into her stormy and vulnerable in-between world. She is the founder of Artis Art Academy, which teaches drawing and painting to kids from 1st through 12th grades, including portfolio preparation for those applying to art colleges. Mimi describes Closer, “It’s about being far and close at once, wanting what’s too far to hold, and longing for the  breath she once shared…”

About Mimi Yoon’s selected work for his billboard; Closer”,  In 2009, I was invited to participate in a project called “1000 girls in 100 days”. 10 artists were to draw 1 girl a day for 100 consecutive days.  Most of the days, we had a theme and all 10 artists were to draw his/her girl related to or of the theme. Once in a while we had 2-3 days of no theme.  “Closer” was a girl I drew on one of the no theme days.  What inspired me?  I am usually inspired by the emotion I feel at the moment. Some make sense and some don’t.  And often I feel that there’s an in-between space and time where I have been and always have the desire to return to as if I’ve left something unfinished there.  It’s a place full of dreams and memories that feels very close yet too far and away at once.  It’s what makes me think of the poetic thoughts and dream the daydreams and have déjà vu’s.  “Closer” depicts the feeling of wanting and longing for what’s too far to hold yet feels very close. And it is not a self portrait.
