Peirce’s work has been shown in numerous national and international galleries and exhibitions. Features of his work can be found in publications such as Juxtapoz, Blackbook, Print, ISM Quarterly, Happy, Beautiful Decay, Automatic, various city papers and online on web sites like Wooster Collective, Slam Hype, Fecal Face, Juxtapoz, Coolhunting, Transworld Skate/Snow and Modart Europe. Daryll received his BFA in Denver, but he currently works out of his home studio in Oakland, California.

Artsprojekt: What inspires your art?

Daryll Peirce: Humanity, nature, city, growth, future to name a few subjects. More intimately from travel, skateboarding, day-dreaming, exploring streets and nature. Humanity inspires me both from interacting with it in a direct sense, meaning with peers, other creators, strangers, social outcasts, etc, as well as from an observational voyeuristic perspective. I try to internalize those views and analyze, or imagine connections and relationships. That actually goes for other influences as well. Those fleeting images fuse with memories, hopes, and symbolism I’m interested in to hopefully create something that will affect others.

AP: What is the relationship between technique and content in your work?

Daryll: The content of my work is much more ethereal, being a slow growing amalgamation of experience and thought. Technique is not as important to me. Its simply my best attempt at using my accumulated skills for a literal translation of the concept. Although I do love the act of “drawing” into my work with paint.

xxx

AP: Describe your first experience of making art and how it affected your life’s journey

Daryll: As a kid, I was always good at simply entertaining myself with drawing in the corner of the room. I’m recall several cartoons, robots and monster trucks on sticky blue tracing paper. I can’t really say how it affected my plight, it was just always there and I wouldn’t know how to look at it objectively. I still have an amazing stapled book I made of my monster truck collection. I later made t-shirts out of one that had a truck named “Fli ‘N Hi” crushing a school bus.

AP: Describe your most recent experience of making art.

Daryll: Painting flat on my drawing table in my studio last night. Currently bouncing between two pieces in a current series. A little bit of ink sketching between paint drying as well.

AP: Take us on a guided tour through a day in your life as an artist

Daryll: I basically work all day everyday and have a hard time sleeping and focusing due to it all streaming together. Occasionally I get out to skate or have fun, but usually I’m thinking about what I should be doing, thus not having much fun having fun. I need to figure that out. That said, I do enjoy my work and believe in what I am doing.

Artsprojekt: What inspires my art?

Damian King: People, relationships, ironies, beauty, pain, and struggle. I try not to take life too seriously, so a sense of humor often makes it way into my work.

AP: What is the relationship between technique and content in my work?

Deekin: Ok, that’s a tough one. I believe that, like a good song, a good piece of artwork usually comes from the heart. Then it is a matter of being able to turn off all the filters and let your heart flow through your hand. That way the piece can be a more engaging personal experience for the viewer. Simply put, If i want a piece to be full of energy and life I will use bright palette and quick lively brushstrokes. If I want something with a more somber or ‘dark’ tone I will use a darker, cooler palette and slower heavier strokes.

AP: My first experience making art and how it affected my lifes journey:

Deekin: My first memories of making art are drawing epic stick-man battle scenes and football players with disproportionately large heads in my best friends basement in grade school. I always knew that I would pursue ‘art’ in some way. I have always loved the way art allows me to communicate with people in a non-verbal way. I also really enjoy the aspect of creating the work, it is very much like building something.

AP: My most recent experience making art:

Deekin: I just completed a painting that will be made into a promotional poster for a rock n’ roll band from SF. I had done a poster for this band previously, and the lead singer really liked this series of black and white paintings I have been doing based on photos I have taken of some of my favorite spots around Oakland. So, he commissioned me to do one for them of the exterior of the Red Devil Lounge in SF, their next venue.

AP: A tour through a day in my life as an artist:

Deekin: Wake up around 9 or 10am, make coffee/breakfast, and turn on my computer, check and reply to emails and update social networking sites.. Depending on what kind of project I am working on I will either stay on the computer to render something using Photoshop and/or Illustrator, or I will start drawing or painting for a few hours til around 2. I make lunch and take a walk or skate with my sketchbook and find a spot on the Berkeley campus to sit and draw for maybe an hour or so. Come back home and continue painting or pixelating for another 3-4 hours. Eat dinner, maybe check my emails again, watch movie or just hang out with my lady for a couple hours. If I have some extra energy or an approaching deadline I will work for another 2-4 hours from like 10pm -2 am.

AP: New shows or work?

Deekin: I am in the beginning stages of working on illustrating a fairytale book for adults. The book is being translated from the original old German fairy tales which are very dark and scary, not really fairy-tales for kids.

His art ranges from soulful, deftly shaded portraits to color therapy, with geometric elements adding up to half-hidden faces, and a mind’s eye or two to encourage you to see internally and externally. He’s been a great friend of mine for sometime, starting back a few years back. He’s a very talented guy, with a great personality and after surviving a recent stabbing while painting a mural in SF his art has grown even stronger with his recorvery. As you will see, Chor is a man of few, carefully selected words… So we will let his work do the talking for him, as you will see, each one of his pieces, is worth more than a 1000 words.

As an artist and as a person Chris is always aiming for higher grounds of ‘self realization’ and you can see this eminating from his body of work. Chris currently resides in Montreal, Canada, but like myself, he loves to travel, so you never know where he will pop up next.

Artsprojekt: What inspires your art?

Chris Dyer: Everything I come in contact ends up entering the realm of my paintings. So it is important I am influenced by good meaningfull things in my life, if not the abundant crap that pollutes our misguided world will reflect in my soul expressions. I like to travell and the cultures I learn from end up in there. Of course the colorfull 80s culture I grew up with show up. Stuff like skateboarding, surfing, vynil records, video games, action figures are all broken down and become pieces of a puzzle where everything is part of the oneness of the absolute reality we are part of. I am a spiritual person and this vision of unity is the glue that holds all of these many influences together.

AP: What is the relationship between technique and content in your work?

Dyer: I think that technique is important in that you have to be good enough in the way you express yourself. It’s insulting to be out there as a professional artist when your art is so undeveloped it hurts the eyes. But in the end, if your technique is crisp but youre saying nothing, your work is empty and dosnt appeal to me. Art is a powerfull tool to convey messenges, but if were just using it to be “cool” it is a power that has been misused. So content is crucial, hopefully something that uplifts the souls of the viewers, something that teaches us to be better humans and helps us manifest a better reality for all. Technique will always be improoving, but if the messege of your art is clear and good, you can’t loose.

AP: Describe your first experience of making art and how it affected your life’s journey

Dyer: I have been a creative person as long as I remember. I used to draw all the time as a kid and would also build robots made out of junk, or club houses, mix tapes, etc. Art didnt affect my life. Life affected my art.

AP: Describe your most recent experience of making art.

Dyer: I cant stop making art. If I do, I loose my groundation and the mind beats the living crap out of me. I have the inevitable need of constant expression. I was supposed to chill out during christmas, but I coudn’t so I painted another skateboard. It came out super sick, if I may say it myself, so I was stoked. It was some kind of energetical abstract fish, that represents my need to eat this watery living creature, despite my intention of being a vegetarian.

Dyer: I get up on an average of 2pm. Its not that Im lazy, it’s cause I cant stop working and keep on going till 5 or 6 o 7am, when I just drop. Once Im up I do some quick yoga to stretch the muscles, and make breakfast for my girlfriend n me (oatmeal n bagels). I then put in a couple of hours into answering my many emails and then probably go out to run aerons (post office, buying materials n such). By the time it gets dark I am already doing some kind of art, either painting, drawing or photoshop. On saturdays I go out for breakfast a block away from here. I rarely party unless there’s a real need for it (which is rare) and hit the seldom art show like once a month (probably cause my art will be part of it n need to rep). For fun I will go out skating sometimes or hit a the record shop n dig crates. That’s when Im in the city (Montreal) cause when I’m traveling, each day presents itself more spontaneously.

AP: Please let us know what you have coming up. Are you working on art for a new show? Working on a new product line? Working on a commission piece?

Dyer: Right now I am about to go to Belgium to get legally married with my girlfriend who’s from there. I don’t have any major shows coming up. I am just taking personal commissions from clients. My latest one was a 8 foot surfboard for an old friend in Peru. In Europe I will be painting a Cd cover and a book cover. I wish I was working on a solo show for a big gallery, just doing whatever comes from my heart, but I am still very unknownin in the gallery mainstream and am forced to use my time on jobs that pay right away.

But I do believe this year will be great for me getting to that level of recognition though, as I believe the level of my art is already there. First of all, I have a full on art book to be published sometime this year. It will be 250 color pages of all the different art I’ve done through the years.

Also, a documentary about my art, that I have been working on for a couple of years, will finally be released at a bunch of film festivals and the on dvd. Andy Howell is in the flick, together with many other artists, pro skaters, musicians and conscious cats in general. It’s gonna be awesome and very inspiring. So yeah, I appreciate the support of Artsprojekt in helping me get these projects and art out to the masses, so they can give some very needed spiritual healing, as well as getting my artistic career established. Big Ups!

Jones is an illustrator with a BA from Billy Blue College of Design, currently living and working in Sydney, Australia.

Artsprojekt: What inspires your art?

Chelsea: Ever since I was a little kid Ive had a big love for comics and cartoons. My Saturday mornings consisted of a television, a pencil and a blank art book. I’d sit for hours and recreate the characters on the screen. It helped me become very familiar with the form of almost any character on television. Still to this day, those sketching sessions have had an influence over my work..

I also get inspiration from the media world and celebrities. I like choosing delinquent celebrities who have been in the media and recreating them at their worst.

AP: What is the relationship between technique and content in your work?

Chelsea: I’ve often been told that my work looks like “realistic cartoons with an edge.” I think this juxtaposes quite well with the themes and concepts in most of my pieces because it provides an alternate world in which these characters or people can exist. I like twisting and tweaking with the personalities or perceptions of the characters so implementing the “realistic cartoon” side to my work pushes that extra button in the audiences imagination.

AP: Describe your first experience of making art and how it affected your life’s journey

Chelsea: Well, my first real experience of art-making (besides the Saturday morning sketch sessions) was way back in primary school when Pokemon, Dragonball Z and Tazos were in vogue. I was the token artist of the class and that meant that I’d get about 10 requests a day for drawings of Pikachu, Homer Simpson, Sailor Moon etc.

I also discovered graffiti art back in those days and I’d design graff pieces on paper for almost everyone. Drawing all of that shit gave me a ton of practice and I havnt stopped drawing since, so I think if it never happened, I’d have never become an artist..

AP: Describe your most recent experience of making art.

Chelsea: I’m working on a wall-piece at the moment using a mixture of acrylics and spray paint. Only problem is that it’s in a poorly-vented room and it’s summer in Australia now so it gets pretty intense. I find myself usually painting it in 30 minute sessions.

AP: Take us on a guided tour through a day in your life as an artist

Chelsea: Well at the moment I’m usually creating 1-2 digital works a day depending on how inspired I am. However when it comes to paid-jobs I’ve gotta find that inspiration quickly so I’m usually raiding art blogs on the Internet and reading magazines like Empty and Juxtapoz. I’m also a freelance graphic designer so in conclusion, I work from home and just go out and chill whenever I want really. It’s a tough life I’ll admit.
